Athens County Auditor Jill Thompson reminds residents that a property tax break of up to 75 percent may be available to owners of properties damaged or destroyed by the weekend's severe storms. Applications are available at the website www.athenscountyauditor.org.

"Property owners should complete the application even if the repairs will be made immediately," said Thompson. "Owners should keep track of the damage and submit photographs with the application along with any additional information to assist in assessing the value of the damage."

Property values are reduced on a sliding scale that is adjusted on a quarterly basis. A percentage reduction of up to 75 percent is allowed for damage caused on or prior to June 30. A 50 percent reduction may be available for property damage from July through September. Separate applications are necessary for real estate and manufactured homes.

Applications should be mailed to Athens County Auditor Jill Thompson, 15 S. Court St., Room 330, Athens, OH 45701. For additional information, call 592-3223.
