Lisa Trocchia-Balkits was named Athens Food Rescue Volunteer of the Month for September.

Trocchia-Balkits teaches online graduate-level courses for Green Mountain College in Vermont and is involved in curriculum design for Green Mountain’s degree program in sustainable food systems. She also researches and writes about food systems.

During her involvement in the local food movement in Athens, Trocchia-Balkits has worn many hats over the years. She has been a market gardener at Athens Farmers Market, a worker/owner at Crumbs Bakery, a chef for a cafe at ACEnet, owner of a local food-based production and consulting business, executive director for Community Food Initiatives, and co-chair of the Athens Food Policy Council.

Trocchia-Balkits and her husband, Ivars Balkits, travel regularly to Athens, Greece, to visit family. During one of these trips, Trocchia-Balkits became aware of self-organized citizen responses to food waste, and connected with the group Boroume — which Trocchia-Balkits says means “We Can!”
