Roxon Kofi Osei, the Columbus man convicted May 2 in Athens County Common Pleas Court of rape, has filed an appeal with the 4th District Court of Appeals.
Osei was given the maximum sentence of 11 years in prison by Judge George McCarthy after Osei was convicted by a jury of forcibly raping a woman Jan. 10, 2017, with her unable to consent to sex due to being impaired by intoxication.
Osei had a private attorney during the trial, but is being represented in the appeal by Assistant State Public Defender Craig Jaquith.
The notice of appeal does not state grounds for the appeal, but preparation of a trial transcript has been ordered. Legal briefs in the appeal are expected to by filed later by Jaquith and the Athens County Prosecutor’s Office.
Osei was convicted of raping a woman in her apartment after the two had attended her 21st birthday party at an Athens bar. There was testimony at trial that the two Ohio University students had been friends up until that time.
In addition to the 11 years in prison, McCarthy fined Osei $5,000 and ordered him to pay court costs. Osei was required register as a sex offender.
