A judge has set bond at $75,000 on an Athens man accused of raping an Ohio University student on Wednesday.
Mohammed Al-Mashrafi Nasser, 23, made his initial appearance Thursday in Athens County Municipal Court, via video from Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail, on felony charges of rape and abduction. Judge Todd Grace set bond and scheduled a preliminary hearing for Monday. Grace also ordered Nasser not to have contact with the woman.
According to the charges, Nasser is accused of holding the woman down in his car in the Athens parking garage and inserting his fingers into her vagina after being told no several times. The abduction charge alleges that he would not let her out of the vehicle and put his hand over the lock to not let her out.
There is some confusion about the suspect’s name. An Ohio University spokesman said he is a student, but OU has his name as Mohammed Al-Mashrafi — without the Nasser.
The incident was reported to police at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, according to a news release from the police department.
