East State Street flood

High water has shut down parts of East State Street in Athens on Thursday morning.

The Athens County Engineer's Office and ODOT are reporting high water on the following roadways:

  • County Road 4 (Glen Ebon), from Routes 33 to 691
  • County Road 17A (Hebbardsville), at McGrath Road 
  • County Road 18 (Potter), from Route 550 to Emma Wyatt Road
  • County Road 24 (Harmony), from South Canaan to dead end
  • South Canaan Road, from Troy Road to Mansfield Road
  • County Road 48 (New England), from Route 329 to McGurr Road
  • County Road 58 (Frost), from Route 50 to Frost
  • County Road 59 (Four Mile), from Route 144 to Ridge Road
  • County Road 68 (Johnson Run), at Oakdale Road
  • County Road 93 (Millfield Main Street), from Route 13 to Bell Road)
  • County Road 93 (Truetown), from Route 685 to Oregon Ridge Road

High water has shut down a portion of East State Street in Athens, from the Kroger area down to Walmart.

According to the National Weather Service, the Hocking River in Athens was at 22.5 feet as of 8 a.m. on Thursday. It is predicted to begin receding later in the morning.

The Ohio Department of Transportation is reporting the following roadways are closed/have restricted access as of Thursday morning:

Closed:

  • Route 13, between Routes 550 and 682
  • Route 13, between Routes 682 and 685
  • Route 56, between Athens city limits and Vinton County line
  • Route 144, between Routes 50 and 124
  • Route 144, between Routes 50 and 329
  • Route 329, between Routes 144 and 550
  • Route 329, between Routes 550 and 13
  • Route 682, between Route 33 and Chauncey

Restricted/Partial access:

  • Route 33, between Nelsonville and Route 682

The West Washington roundabout in Nelsonville is closed due to high water. All traffic headed to Route 33 will need to use the Routes 78/691 exit on the east side of town.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning until 3:45 April 4, due to the Hocking River reaching 18.7 feet. Flood stage is at 20 feet, and the river is forecasted to continue rising until Thursday morning where it supposed to crest at 21 feet.

Several highways are closed due to high water as of 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation. Closed highways include:

  • Route 13 is closed from Route 550 to Route 682
  • Route 13 is closed from Route 682 to Route 685
  • Route 13 is closed from Route 685 to Route 329
  • Route 13 is closed from Route 329 to Route 78
  • Route 56 is closed between Vinton County line and Athens
  • Route 144 is closed from Route 50 to Route 13
  • Route 329 is closed from Route 50 to Route 144
  • Route 329 is closed from Route 144 to Route 550
  • Route 329 is closed from Route 550 to Route 13
  • Route 356 is closed from Route 681 to Route 56
  • Route 682 is closed from Route 33 to Route 13 in Chauncey
  • Route 685 is closed from Route 78 to Route 13

Several highways are closed due to high water as of 3 p.m., according to the Ohio Department of Transportation. Closed highways include:

  • Route 56 is closed between Vinton County line and Athens
  • Route 356 is closed between Route 681 and Route 56
  • Route 681 is closed between Route 356 and Route 50

There are two highways with restricted/partial access:

  • Route 685 is restricted between Route 78 and Route 13
  • Route 690 is restricted between Route 50 and Route 550
