A group of professional skaters, including Tony Hawk, will be making a stop in Athens on Sunday afternoon as part of a Midwest skating tour.
Athens is the final destination in the eight-city tour that began on Aug. 11. Other cities on the tour included Cincinnati, St. Louis, Kansas City, Davenport (Iowa), Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and Detroit.
The Birdhouse Summer Tour — named after Birdhouse Skateboards — will include Hawk, Aaron “Jaws” Homoki, Ben Raybourn, Clint Walker, David Loy, Kevin Staab, Willy Santos, Clive Dixon, Mike Davis, Shawn Hale and Shaun Gregoire. The skaters will be traveling in MINI vehicles through the Midwest states and recording their journey to share on social media websites.
The tour will stop by the Athens Skate Park (located behind the Athens Community Center, 701 E. State St.) at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Hawk is undeniably the most famous professional skateboarder in history, going pro at the age of 14. He was the National Skateboard Association World Champion for 12 consecutive years. He has a series of skateboarding video games named after him — Tony Hawk's Pro Skater — and although he retired from professional competitions in 1999, he still remains active at the age of 46, doing personal skate shows.
