Hunters in Athens County checked a total of 1,322 white-tailed deer during the weeklong deer-gun season, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources has reported.
That marks a decrease from the total of 1,591 in 2017; the statewide total was 60,557 this season compared to 72,814 from last season. ODNR is attributing the decline to poor weather.
Athens County’s total of 1,322 was the 10th highest of Ohio’s 88 counties. The highest total was 2,174 checked in Coshocton County.
Nearby Washington County was higher at 1,405, while other surrounding counties all checked similar totals: Meigs (1,233), Morgan (1,198), Gallia (1,145), Hocking (1,112), Perry (1,042) and Vinton (937).
Two other days have been added to the deer-gun season on Saturday, Dec. 15 and Sunday, Dec. 16.
Muzzleloader season is scheduled for Jan. 5-8, 2019, while deer archery season remains open through Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019.
