Athens’ comeback effort fell short over the weekend as the Lady Bulldogs fell 40-36 at home against Logan on Saturday afternoon.
Ella Chapman led Athens (1-2, 1-0) with 18 points on 17 shots, including a 2-4 mark from deep. The freshman also added five rebounds and a steal in the loss.
Only three other girls scored for Athens in the contest. Olivia Smart added nine points while Fern Sigman pitched in seven. Asa Holcombe, the leading scorer for the team this year, only had two points but pitched in seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.
A 20-point first quarter from Logan already put Athens into a decent size hole where it ended up being an 11-point differential by the end of the first.
A spirited second quarter effort made it a 27-24 game going into the halftime break.
Coming out though, both teams seemed to lose their offensive footing. Athens held Logan to only 13 points in the second half but they themselves only mustered up 12 points.
Kinsey Myers led the Chieftains with 10 points. Ryann Landis had eight while Dani Mahaffey and Mollie Landis each added seven.
Defensively, Athens played well enough to get the victory but an unlucky 6-30 mark for two-point field goals sealed the deal in their comeback effort.
