The Southern Ohio Copperheads were victims of a late rally in their season opener.
The Copperheads lost, 3-1, at Licking County’s Don Edwards Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Southern Ohio, defending champions of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, open the season 0-1.
The Settlers (1-0) took the win by scoring a run in the seventh and two in the eighth to go ahead.
The result spoiled a solid opening outing from Southern Ohio pitcher Jackson Mandella. He pitched six shutout innings, allowing only two hits and a walk while striking out seven.
Collin Sells took the loss out of the bullpen, giving up three runs on four hits, four walks and two strikeouts. Only one of the runs allowed was earned, as Southern Ohio made two errors.
The game was scoreless until Southern Ohio pushed across a run in the top of the seventh. Phillip Glasser’s RBI single scored Sebastian Fabik for a 1-0 edge.
Licking County erased the deficit in the bottom of the seventh thanks to Justin Perez’s RBI groundout.
The Settlers scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth. Evan Fromwiller’s RBI single made it 2-1, and Evan Knaus drew a bases-loaded walk for a 3-1 edge.
Licking County used four pitchers. Tanner Griggs was the final pitcher used, and he picked up the win after pitching 1 1-3 innings. He didn’t allow a run, hit or walk, striking out one.
