Jake Hansen was on top of his game on Tuesday morning, leading the Southern Ohio Copperheads to a victory.
Hansen pitched six shutout innings in Southern Ohio’s 6-2 win over the Cincinnati Steam inside Bob Wren Stadium. A Kids Day event led to an early 11:35 a.m. start, but it was no problem for Hansen.
He held the Steam to just four hits and three walks in his six innings of work. He struck out six, lowering his ERA to 0.64 on the young season.
Both teams are 3-4 in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League.
Nick Kaiser provided two innings of relief, while Braxton Kelley pitched the final inning.
Kaiser allowed two runs on three hits, while Kelley struck out the side in the ninth.
Ben Rushing and Carter Cross each had two hits to pace Southern Ohio’s offense.
Southern Ohio scored two runs in the second to jump ahead. Rushing led off the inning with a solo home run. Scott Combs’ sacrifice fly later in the frame made it 2-0.
The Copperheads went ahead 4-0 in the fourth inning. Reese Trahey was hit by a pitch, and later scored on an error in right field.
It was 4-0 after Cross scored Lucas Nasonti with an RBI single.
Cincinnati closed the gap to 4-2 in the seventh thanks to Grant Richardson’s two-run single.
However, the Copperheads got the runs back in the bottom half of the frame. Rushing’s two-run single scored Phillip Glasser and Cross, making it 6-2.
Kaiser stranded two Cincinnati runners on base in the top of the eighth, then Kelley recorded three strikeouts in the top of the ninth to lock down the victory.
Rushing had three RBIs in the win, while Trahey scored two runs.
The two teams will continue their series on Wednesday and Thursday inside Bob Wren Stadium. Both games will begin at 7:05 p.m.
Southern Ohio will travel to take on the Hamilton Joes on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
