McARTHUR — The fourth inning made all the difference in Vinton County’s 3-1 softball win over the Athens Bulldogs.
Athens’ Kaylee Stewart and Vinton County’s Abby Faught were locked into a pitching duel, as the two teams were scoreless through three innings.
Athens broke the deadlock, pushing a run across in the top of the fourth. Kailyn Sharp’s RBI scored Stewart for the 1-0 advantage.
The Vikings weren’t down for long. They scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth for the 3-1 lead. It turned out to be all the offense they needed.
Lacy Stapleton had an RBI in the inning, while Rylee Ousley hit a two-run single for the Vikings.
Faught posted zeroes the rest of the way on the scoreboard, allowing the Vikings to sweep the season series against Athens. She allowed an unearned run on seven hits and a walk in seven innings. She struck out seven.
It was a tough-luck loss for Stewart, who didn’t allow an earned run in six innings. She surrendered five hits, but no walks. She struck out one.
Sydney Smith, Faught, Stapleton, Ousley and Jakelyn Brown each hit singles for the Vikings.
Somnia Keesey was 2 for 3 for Athens, including a double. Anna Chen, Stewart, Katie Kish and Ami Brannan each added singles.
Athens is 3-10 overall, and 2-6 in the TVC-Ohio. Vinton County moves to 10-4 overall, and 4-3 in the TVC-Ohio.
