Throwback Thursday

The Woolworth’s store in Athens can be traced all the back to 1928. It expanded once in 1937 and again in 1966. With the last expansion, three buildings were leveled and a new modern building was built. The restaurant/lunch counter was a favorite spot for the “courthouse crowd” and Athens businessman and women. Very often, if you could not find the mayor or other public officials in their offices, you could find them at the Woolworth’s restaurant. The building at 31 S. Court Street is now used by Ohio University for classes and apartments are upstairs. The store closed in 1994. Pictured here, is the 1966 Woolworth’s on Court Street.
